Energy Resources Research Laboratory (ERRL)

The ERRL has managed the data collection, quality assurance and analysis for the Bonneville Power Administration's wind energy resource studies since 1978 and have managed other data management activities for transmission line research.  It maintains a large data base of wind data for the Pacific Northwest.  This web page summarizes the wind statistics of the five Bonneville Power Administration's long term wind monitoring sites in the Pacific Northwest.  The five sites are located in Montana, Oregon and Washington.  An additional site was established in August 2002 at Vansycle, OR sponsored jointly by BPA and  NREL's STEP program. Also included are numerous sites in the OSU Pacific NW Wind Data Base for the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Northern California, and Northern Neveda.

Of the original five historical sites, Browning Depot, MT site was removed on August 13, 2003 and Cape Blanco, OR site was removed on September 10, 2003.  Some new sites were added in 2005 and 2006.  In September 2005 a site near Wasco, OR was installed and in January 2006 a site called Chinook near Hermiston, OR was installed.  These two new sites primary function are to aid wind forecasting in those areas.  Another site has been installed near Adel, OR by the Oregon Office of Energy/NREL’s STEP program in mid-summer 2006.  The data from that site will be included at a later date.
