WELCOME
BACK!
To all students,
staff and faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, welcome back to OSU! We hope you had a great
holiday and an excellent start to 2006,
and we’re looking forward to another great year together here in OSU ME. As you
browse through the first winter-term issue of the ME Bulletin, note especially the information in the
“Miscellaneous Announcements” section,
and check out the new postings in “Jobs and Internships.” Also, we encourage you to participate in the many
upcoming activities and events associated with this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Tribute and Celebration. Please read Dr. Ray’s invitation below, and check out the Celebration 2006 web site link
included in his letter.
To:
The OSU Community
From: Edward
Ray, President
I am pleased to invite you to
participate in the activities associated with Oregon State
University's 24th Annual
Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute and
Celebration. The Celebration 2006 theme is WAKE UP! Justice delayed is
justice denied, promoting Dr. King's
goals for local communities and a society where equality and justice, and freedom and peace can grow and flourish.
By recognizing the strength inherent in diversity,
pledging to a united will and utilizing the energy and synergy of collective
hope each of us can make a difference,
individually and collectively. More than ever,
national and international events lead us to reflect,
in greater depth and breadth, on Dr.
King's aspiration for America.
Celebration 2006 takes place
during the three-week period of January 9 through January 26. The
calendar of events and activities,
jointly sponsored by a number of academic colleges and departments, student organizations,
student government, and
administrative units, may be
accessed on the homepage of the Office of Community and Diversity http://oregonstate.edu/admin/comdiv/mlk.php or via the link on the Oregon State
University
homepage.

MISCELLANEOUS
ANNOUNCEMENTS
This Wednesday, Dr. Ping Ge will be doing a phone interview
with Field and Stream Radio about
last term’s ME 382 “controlled fishing
rod” project. The taped interview will be broadcast nationally about a
month from now; exact time and date TBD. Congratulations again to all project
participants; the press release that went out about the December field test
drew the interest of numerous organizations and publications.

IT’S
NOT TOO LATE to sign
up for a NEW Winter-Term course called
“How Engineers Can Serve Society” (ME 206,
CRN 28699, Section 002, 1 credit,
P/NP). This class is open to all
pre-engineering students, so
help spread the word to friends in other departments! The class will be run by
three faculty members: Dr. Zaworski (ME),
Dr. Toni Doolen (IME), and Dr. Bill
Warnes (ME). It is designed to help you learn how you can use your engineering
knowledge to make a difference in your community,
in the nation, and in the world by
designing, building, fixing,
and teaching people about appropriate technologies. Planned activities include
guest speakers, discussions, and development of local projects that can be
started Spring term. If you’re
interested, sign up today—there are
only 9 spots left in the class.
FE REGISTRATION DEADLINE COMING UP! Mechanical
Engineering students graduating winter,
spring, or summer terms are eligible
to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam during spring term as the first step towards Professional Certification. You
must register for this exam by January
15th, 2006. For
details, see the IIE web site, http://oregonstate.edu/groups/iie/fe_information.html or

MICROGRAVITY FLIGHT TEAM
Want to work on a research project for NASA?
Want to develop something that will help put a person on Mars? You like engines, why not work on a prototype nuclear engine that
powers a plasma rocket? Do you want to conduct an experiment in zero gravity at
26,000 ft? If you answered yes to
any of these questions, come check out the OSU Microgravity Flight Team! We meet
every Wednesday at 6 in Rogers
226.
SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS (SAE)
Formula SAE group meets every Monday at 6 pm in Rogers
