About this e-bulletin

THANK YOU IME–ME FACULTY AND GRAD STUDENTS!

Many thanks to those of you who contributed to the success of this year’s Prospective Grad Student Weekend. We had a strong and enthusiastic contingent of visiting students this year, and we’re hoping many of them will decide to do their graduate work at OSU. Thank each of you for taking the time to welcome them to campus, encourage their interest in our programs, and show them around Corvallis and the coast!

CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. BOB PAASCH,

who was recently named OSU’S new BOEING PROFESSOR OF DESIGN. See the news story at  http://me.oregonstate.edu/news/story/2030.

Wed, Mar 7:  SAE Baja Team Meeting. 5 pm, Rogers 230.

Wed, Mar 7: WME Afternoon Tea with Dr. Belinda Batten, Professor and Department Head of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering. This event is part of the WME “Lunch and Learn” series. Are there things you want to know about the COE? Or whether grad school right for you? Or what it’s like to work in a male-dominated profession? Or for that matter, what mechanical, industrial, and/or manufacturing engineers really do? Here's your chance to meet informally with a leader of the College of Engineering, ask questions, and share your ideas! All engineering students are welcome. Beverages and sweet treats provided.

Tues, Mar 6: IIE Meeting and Officer Elections. 6 pm, Covell 221. Pizza and beverages provided. Holding an officer position gives you a chance to network at national and regional conferences, build your resume, and have fun! All positions are available, including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, FE Review Chair (2), Web Master, Historian, Newsletter, Social Chair, and Membership. If you have questions regarding position responsibilities please email dunhamg@engr.orst.edu

Thurs, Mar 8: American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) meeting. 8 pm, Rogers 230. We’ll eat cookies, watch explosions, build recycled airplanes, and continue working on our Human-Powered Submarine. All comers welcome!

Fri. Mar 9:  Oregon WAVE weekly meeting. 10 am, Graf Basement. Contact Matt Knudsen at matt.knudson@gmail.com for more information.

Fri, Mar 9: ME–IME Seminar: Location Management Strategy for Cellular Networks. Presented by Jipyo Kim, Department of Industrial & Information Systems Engineering, Seoul National University of Technology, and OSU Visiting Professor. 2:30–4 pm, Rogers 230. (Social time 2:30–3; seminar begins promptly at 3.)

Fri, March 9: Center For Teaching and Learning Workshop: Course Portfolios. 2–4 pm, Milam 215. Course portfolios are powerful tools for capturing and making visible the intellectual work that faculty engage in as they plan their learning outcomes and teach to these outcomes. This workshop will introduce the course portfolio, will discuss its purpose and illustrate sample faculty portfolios. We will also explore ways that the portfolio can be used to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Fri, Mar 9: HPV Team Meeting. 3 pm, Dearborn 5B (basement). For more information, contact Ryan Carpenter at carpryan@onid.orst.edu.

Plan Ahead...

Mon, Mar 12: EWB General Meeting and 2007-08 Officer Elections. 6 pm, Peavy 272. The four positions up for election are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Please send your nominations to douglas.vanbossuyt@gmail.com before 5pm Monday, March 12, or bring them to the meeting. You may nominate someone else or yourself; but note that both you and whomever you nominate must be chapter members in good standing. Voting is also restricted to  members in good standing. If you're not sure of your membership status, please check with EWB membership coordinator Andy Sabalowsky (sabaloan@engr.orst.edu).  Dues may be paid to Andy up until the start of the meeting on March 12.

Mon, Mar 12: Free Public Forum on Nanotechnology. 7–9 pm, U of O Erb Memorial Union Gumwood Room. The aim of the forum is to engage the public in exploring the societal benefits and potential risks of nanotechnology. Brief presentations on what nanoscience is, how it can benefit society, and its possible risks, will befollowed by small group discussions where the participants will weigh the benefits and risks of nanotechnology in the context of nanoparticle-based solar cells. For more information and to register for this event, go to
http://greennano.org/register.html. NOTE: This forum is being offered in conjunction with a two-day Safer Nano Conference, Mar 12-13. For more information and conference registration, visit http://greennano.org/marchevent.html
