About this e-bulletin

MIME COMMUNICATION KUDOS

Congratulations to Dr. Kagan Tumer (Dynamics and Control faculty in Mechanical Engineering), who received the Best Paper award at the recent AAMAS 07 (International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multi Agent Systems) for his paper titled "Distributed Agent-Based Air Traffic Flow Management," coauthored with Adrian Agogino, UCSC, NASA Ames Research Center. This year, 531 papers were submitted to AAMAS, of which 119 were accepted after a double-blind review of the full papers. Tumer and Agogino’s paper details how a distributed, learning-agent–based method that sets a “metering" parameter at fixes along aircrafts' routes significantly reduces air traffic congestion.  This approach is fully compatible with current air traffic routing systems. The results were validated using an industry standard simulator (FACET).

AND…

Congratulations also to this year’s recipients of the first annual OSU Culture of Writing Award in Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering:

§         ME award recipients: Amanda Comer, Kristina Gustin, Michelle Mullett, and Kyle Zirschky for their senior design report titled Thermal Weed Seed Killer.

§         IME award recipients: Zac Castro, Janelle Dunlap, Brandon Koida, Tram Le, and Rebecca Mitchell for their senior design report titled Key Advantage Production Line Improvements at GE Security in Salem, OR.

The OSU Culture of Writing Awards initiative was established in 2006 by the OSU Writing Intensive Curriculum Program, to encourage and reward outstanding undergraduate writing efforts throughout the university. In this first year of our school’s participation in the university-wide initiative, MIME award candidates were nominated by the ME and IME senior design instructors. Next year, the MIME award process will expand to include prizes for outstanding writing at the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior levels.

AND…

Last but certainly not least, congratulations to the 2007 OSU Baja SAE team! While final results for the 2007 Baja SAE World Challenge—which took place at Rochester Institute of Technology this past weekend—are not yet posted, unofficial results put Beaver Racing in first  place (out of 141 entries) in both the Maneuverability and the Design events. Design rankings are based on teams’ combined scores for their written design report and the on-site design evaluation, for which Beaver Racing received the highest and second-highest ratings, respectively.

THINKING ABOUT GETTING A MASTER’S DEGREE? CONSIDER THE U of O  MASTERS INDUSTRIAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS. The University of Oregon Materials Science Institute’s Masters Industrial Internship (MSI) Programs serve regional companies by providing focused training through coursework, labs and internships to students in chemistry, physics and engineering. Our goal is to provide a bridge from academia to industry in which the students become contributors in a fraction of the time of other programs. We now have four tracks preparing masters-level students for industry: Semiconductor Device Processing, Polymers and Coatings, Organic Synthesis/Organometallics, and, new this summer,  Optical Materials and Devices. For all the MSI internship programs, soft-skills are a core component of our curriculum. Students work in teams, communicate through daily presentations and written reports, lead discussions and lectures – all while working on technical challenges that require them to hone their problem solving skills with minimum faculty direction. In the fall, students interview and start nine-month internships at participating companies.  They typically complete remaining course work at the university closest to their host company during their internship. This model allows students to complete their degree and their internship at the same time. Companies benefit by having uninterrupted access to interns which allows for a seamless transition from intern to permanent employee. There are still a few openings for summer 2007—but if you’re interested, act quickly! For more information, visit our website http://materialscience.uoregon.edu/ (follow the links to Masters Industrial Internship Program) or contact Chris Larson cslarson@uoregon.edu, (541) 346-5898. OSU students who are interested in this program may also contact Dr. Bill  Warnes at  warnesw@engr.orst.edu.

INFORMATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT/MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT position is currently available for qualified graduate or undergraduate student, start date ASAP. This job requires skills in PHP and MySQL.  Familiarity with OSU Central Web Services and/or OSU Engineering Web Services is a plus. Hours: 10–20 hrs/week.  Hourly wage DOE. If you are interested in this position, please contact Prof. Shiwoo Lee at Shiwoo.Lee@oregonstate.edu
