STUDENT ASSISTANTS NEEDED FOR FALL ’06 ME 101. Here's an opportunity to share your enthusiasm for Mechanical Engineering with our newest students. We're looking for some sophomores and juniors to help out in the ME-101 orientation classes next fall. You would be attending a recitation class once a week to help students solve problems and especially to help them be successful with their group projects. ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS SUMMER UPDATE

Hello fellow EWB'ers and welcome to SUMMER! Thanks to your support, EWB-OSU is now one year old and stronger than ever! Just because it's summer doesn't mean EWB goes into hibernation. Activities are still in full-swing! Read on to learn about 4 ways to stay involved and make a difference.

1) da Vinci Days - JULY 15-16. da Vinci Days is coming! The Corvallis da Vinci Days festival highlights science and math-related themes and is a decidedly family event. EWB-OSU has reserved a booth in the "community corner" of the festival (details below). This is our chance to reach out to the Corvallis community and spread the word about EWB-OSU and our El Salvador project. We need volunteers to staff the booth and answer questions from 8am to 7pm on July 15th and 9am to 5pm on July 16th. Please contact Kelsey Edwardsen to volunteer edwardke@onid.orst.edu

2) ASABE conference - JULY 9-12. The Portland Professional chapter of EWB is looking for volunteers to staff the EWB booth at the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers conference annual meeting being held in Portland. This is a good chance to meet like-minded professional engineers, network, and check out a major conference while spreading the word about EWB. EWB-PDX is hoping for five EWB-OSU student volunteers to help run the booth. Rick Strittmater from EWB-USA and a professional member from the PDX chapter will also help run the booth so you won't be lonely or on your own! Volunteers are needed on July 9 from 9-10AM and 3-8PM, July 10 from 9:30AM to 5pm, July 11 from 8AM to 5PM, and July 12 from 8AM to 12PM. 3) OSU START: Now through August 25. Like talking about EWB? Bored and hanging out in Corvallis this summer? Then why not get PAID to represent EWB-OSU at the OSU START events held throughout the summer! Pay is $8/hr with about two hours of work expected from 7-9am on the following days: Friday, June 30; Friday, July 7; Monday, July 10; Friday, July 14; Tuesday, July 18; Friday July 21; Thursday, August 24; Friday, August 25. 4) EWB-OSU Banquet preparations. As you read this, the banquet committee is hard at work planning for the fall EWB-OSU banquet. Coincidentally, the banquet committee is looking for more volunteers to help out this summer and during the actual banquet. This is a GREAT opportunity to get involved with something that will make a real difference to the El Salvador project and the club. Please contact Kelly Wilson wilsonke@onid.orst.edu for more information. Even if you don't have time to dedicate to banquet planning and execution, you can still make a big difference! We're actively drafting up our invitation lists. If you have a rich uncle, a mom that's an engineering manager at Intel, a sister that loves supporting good causes, or a brother who wants some good food and a show, we want you to talk with them about EWB-OSU, the El Salvador project, and the upcoming banquet. The banquet is scheduled for the evening of October 6 in Corvallis. UC BERKELEY’s Department of Mechanical Engineering will be hosting the sixth annual Conference on Micro and Nanotechnology for Power Generation and Energy Conversion Applications (PowerMEMs), Nov. 29—Dec. 01, 2006. The objective of the PowerMEMS 2006 workshop is to catalyze innovation in micro and nanotechnology for power generation and energy conversion applications by providing researchers with a forum for discussing latest research results and promoting progress towards commercialization. The scope ranges from integrated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to novel materials for energy conversion applications, mostly at the watt and sub-watt power levels. These applications center on portable electric power generation for consumer electronics, soldiers, and remote sensors, but also encompass cooling of microelectronics and propulsion for micro air vehicles and nanosatellites. The workshop will allow interaction between the multiple disciplines required for power MEMS, such as electrical, chemical, and mechanical engineering, chemistry, and material science. It will also provide a forum to address the needs for commercialization of novel Power MEMS technologies through the interaction with energy policy and entrepreneurial specialists. Technical topics of interest include:

§ Micro heat engines for power generation and propulsion

§ Micro fuel cells and micro reactors for fuel processing and power generation

§ Thermoelectric and thermophotovoltaic that leverage micro and nanotechnology

§ MEMS piezoelectric and electromagnetic power generators

§ Micro thrusters and similar miniature propulsion microsystems

§ Micro coolers and other thermal management technologies

§ Nanostructured materials for energy storage, thermal management, or other energy-related applications

§ Micro and nano-scale catalysis, combustion, heat and mass transfer

FACULTY RESEARCH GRANT OPPORTUNITY: The Human Frontier Science Program has issued a Call for Letters of Intent for Research Grants for Interdisciplinary Research. This program is encouraging collaborative research across a wide range of disciplines including engineering, life sciences and physical sciences.

SCHOLARSHIPS and FELLOWSHIPS

ANNUAL COMPETITION FOR FULBRIGHT GRANTS OPENS. The Institute of International Education (IIE), in cooperation with the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, is pleased to announce the opening of the 2007-2008 Fulbright U.S. Student Program competition. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards approximately 1,200 grants annually and currently operates in over 140 countries around the world. Fulbright full grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition. Two OSU students received a Fulbright grant for the 2006-07 academic year (see: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ncs/newsarch/2006/May06/fulbright.html). For all grants, applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and hold at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent by the beginning date of the grant. Creative and performing artists are not required to have a bachelor’s degree, but they must have four years of relevant training or study. The AMERICAN ACADEMY OF MECHANICS is pleased to announce the availability of two FOUNDER PRIZES AND GRANTS to be awarded in September 2006 to doctoral candidates in the field of Mechanics. Funding has been arranged by the Robert M. and Mary Haythornthwaite Foundation by Professor Haythornthwaite, founder and first President of the Academy. The award(s) will be made on the recommendation of an AAM committee. The Prize consists of a Certificate and $1000 that will be presented at the annual meeting of the Academy, usually held in November. The Grant will be made to that same person in two installments, $6,000 in September 2006 and up to $3,000 in January 2007, the latter dependent on the size of the approved budget and receipt by the AAM committee of an acceptable progress report. In order to encourage contestants to think constructively about the impact of new and pending developments, they will be asked to compose an original essay of no more than a thousand words under the title “Progress through Mechanics”. The winning essay will be published in the Academy’s journal Mechanics. The award is open to those who, as of July 1, 2006 are registered as graduate students at a degree granting institution within the Americas, have completed at least one year of full-time graduate study at that institution, have been assigned a thesis advisor at the institution and have had a doctoral thesis topic emphasizing mechanics approved by the institution following candidacy or equivalent procedures. There are no restrictions with regard to citizenship, residency, race, religion or sex. Letters of support will be required of the thesis advisor and in addition one from either a Member or a Fellow of AAM. Contestants will be judged on the basis of the essay, plans, references and academic history. The intent of the Grant is to support the research of the student through an approved combination of equipment purchases, information access, travel, etc., but not routine living expenses or fees. THE NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY (NRL) POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. This program is open to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents and offers a competitive stipend as well as insurance, relocation, and travel allowances. This program offers one to three year postdoctoral fellowships designed to increase the involvement of scientists and engineers from academia and industry to scientific and technical areas of interest and relevance to the Navy. Mechanical Engineer II. Duties: Lead and perform detailed design tasks directed toward the production release of new and modified products. Interface with customers, suppliers, and internal resources to conceptualize, design, test, and qualify new product configurations. Manage project resources, schedules, and budgets in accordance with ISO 9001 and company policies and procedures. Establishes product technical specifications and design configurations that meet technical and commercial requirements. Performs mechanical stackups and applies GD&T, FMEA, DFMA, DOE, FEA, and SPC techniques to design problems. Develops manufacturing tools, fixtures and inspection methods and gauges and evaluates product costs and designs for manufacturability. Requirements: BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. A minimum of three years’ hands on experience in product design of mechanical devices or in manufacturing of electro-mechanical devices. Experience with precision-machined plastics and metals and injection molding processes from part design through tool fabrication desired. Experience with fluid systems, controls, sensors, motors, and project management preferred. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with customers, suppliers and co-workers. Ability to travel internationally. Experience with rapid prototyping technologies, AutoCAD, and Solidworks beneficial. Salary range for position is $50-$65K/yr, w/ with very competitive benefits.

Senior Mechanical Engineer, Thermal Systems. This is a salaried, exempt position, grade 10, reporting to the Director of Business Development. Duties: Under minimal engineering supervision, implements assigned projects to meet product technical goals. Modifies existing or develops configured product solutions for specialized applications. Assumes technical project management responsibility for engineering projects moderately complex in depth and breadth. Applies sound engineering judgment and leadership in evaluating and applying various mechanical, material, fabrication, and testing technologies. Qualifies products that meet customer expectations for release to manufacturing. Minimum Requirements: MSME/BSME or equivalent required. A minimum of five years experience with mechanical assemblies used in thermal management systems. Experience with computer cooling or liquid computer cooling strongly desired. Experience with molded and machined plastics, machined and formed metals, and assembly techniques. Five years experience in product and process design and/or technology and two years of project management experience.
