Research Interests

Dr. Apte's research is focused on numerical simulations and modeling of turbulent, multiphase flows. Emphasis is placed on development and application of advanced computational tools to understand fundamental issues related to different topics in thermal/fluid sciences. Current research interests are in the areas of dispersed granular/bubbly flows, sprays, turbulent combustion, and micro-fluidics. The applications span a wide range of disciplines: mechanical/chemical engineering (gas-turbines, rocket motors, fluidized beds), civil engineering (sedimentation/sediment transport), environmental engineering (aerosol dispersion, pollutant transport) and bio-sciences (blood flow).

Dr. Apte's past research has been funded by the Department of Energy's ASC program (at Stanford University), and DOD's MURI program (The Pennsylvania State University). He has also worked in collaboration with the combustor group at Pratt & Whitney.
